Originally from Tasmania, Ron moved around during his lifetime before settling into a 100 year old Stone Cottage in Hamley Bridge in 1996. It was here that he landscaped the property into a country garden and was involved with the ABC Open Garden scheme for 8 years where he raised money to go to various charities.
His gardening saw him win many awards such as the Best Cottage Garden and Champion Garden in 2001 and ABC Gardener of the year Highly Commended Award in 2003. Ron was also responsible for the Rose Memorial Garden at the Tanunda Lutheran Homes.
Since being at Hamley Bridge, he has been the secretary of the Hamley Bridge Meals on Wheels, a member of the Lions Club (Hamley Bridge) and a committee member and chairman/president of the Hamley Bridge District Senior Citizens Homes INC.
Along with gardening, Ron’s interests have been both baking and his 2 male shorthair cats – one a pedigree Scottish Silver tabby and the other a Pedigree Silver spotted Bengal. With both having won numerous awards at SA Cat shows, these beautiful cats are now retired. As for Ron’s interest in baking, he still loves it and bakes goodies for the fundraising stall to raise money for the local Hamley Bridge Hospital several times a year.
It is clear at 78, Ron is never idle. When he is not baking then he is in the garden pottering around. Ron also stated that he would be lost without his computer for both emailing and finding good useful information via Google.
Ron moved into the Hamley Bridge Senior Homes in 2004 where he has been a Resident ever since. Here he is surrounded by a lovely corner garden and has planted many tropical plants in the rear of the unit which include a lily pond and fountain. A perfect place to sit and relax.
It was in 2015 that Ron’s neighbour suggested Country Home Services to Ron in order to make his life a little easier. Ron stated “I thought that just might suit me. I am so pleased I did. I always look forward to their visit and tell the 2 cats to be on their best behaviour. My current contractor absolutely loves the 2 boys (cats). We always sit for a chat when Veronica is ready to leave.”
